About me

Welcome to my blog! I started teaching in 2000 at Durham Middle School. I made the move across the highway to help open Barber in 2005. Currently, I teach 7th grade World Studies, serve as the Jr. Beta Club Sponsor and Social Studies Coordinator. In 2000, I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Middle Grades Education with concentrations in Social Studies and Language Arts. In December 2005, I earned a Master's Degree in Adolescent Education with a focus on Social Studies. My husband and I welcomed our first child Gavin in March 2006. When I am not on "Mom" or "Teacher" duty, I enjoy reading, shopping, and hanging out with family and friends. I am looking forward to another great year with the 7th grade.

 

I created a generic login for my students to access our book for now. We haven't actually started using the book, so it will just be for reference for the moment.

Students in 1st, 2nd, and 6th need to finish categorizing the positive and negative effects of colonialism. Students also need to answer 1-15 on the back using the information about independence. This will be graded tomorrow.

Students catagorized positive and negative effects of colonialism to m from the European and African perspective. Students in 2nd period need to complete the "Positive section" of the chart using information from the group activity.

5th period had time to take our categorization to a deeper level. I introduced our performance task to students today.

Students in all periods finished reviewing the facts about Imperialism in Africa.

Students in periods 1, 2, 5 and 7 started on the mind map using the interview "Face to Face with Jomo Kenyatta." Students read the interview in pairs and then used the pertinent information to complete the mind map.

5th period extended our knowledge by creating a class wordle to describe colonialism.

1st and 2nd and 6th

Students completed a thieves/chapter survey to preview the information about the slave trade and colonial rule in Africa. Students in first period completed Sec 3 Assessment. Students in second and sixth period completed 1-4 in our reading study guide. There is no homework. Work was due by the end of class.

5th and 7th

Students took reflective notes on the slave trade and colonial rule from two resources.

Download Africa Ethnic

All students completed an ethnic group quiz for the warm up today. All answers were given, and students were allowed to make corrections to aid understanding.

The Africa Culture Test is tomorrow for ALL classes.

Cultural Areas of Africa was graded for all periods except 7th.

Students need to finish the ethnic group compare/contrast for homework.

Shortened schedule today due to Barber Writing Assessment

African Cultural Geography Quiz on FRIDAY 1/20/12.

1st, 2nd, and 6th

Graded work-We checked People of Africa Read and Respond today. Students worked on Cultural Areas of Africa assignment. Students had to use a distribution map and chart to answer analysis questions about the different ethnic groups.

5th

Students finished the jigsaw activity about the ethnic groups. Students worked on Cultural Areas of Africa assignment. Students had to use a distribution map and chart to answer analysis questions about the different ethnic groups.

Welcome Back!

Students in first, second, and sixth completed the Section 1 (1-5 p. 46), (1-3 p. 51) and Section 2 (p. 56) to review the Physical Geography and Climate Regions of Africa. Students who did not finish had the opportunity to check out a textbook to finish or will need to access the book on the blog.     

Students in fifth and seventh period created a practice test to review the Physical Geography and Climate Regions of Africa. Students were assigned Physical Geography or Climate Regions to complete the practice test over. They will trade papers tomorrow to review the content in the opposite section.

Each practice test must contain 5 multiple choice , 5 fill in the blank, 5 matching, and 5 true false questions. Students will need to complete an answer key for the assignment as well.
