MONDAY: After today's warm-up, the students finished their "How To" rough drafts. Next, they used a checklist to peer edit a fellow student's draft. This allowed students to recognize where revisions needed to be made.
TUESDAY: After completing today's warm-up, we did a large group model of comparing and contrasting topics using a Venn diagram. We also determined the easiest way to avoid plagiarism is to use in-text citations. Our example was as follows: According to Don Wulffson, author of The Kid Who Invented the Popsicle, the "Romans used drinking straws made of hollow glass tubes."
After the the large group model, the students worked independently to read articles about smart phones. They compared and contrasted various models and gathered textual evidence. This practice will help prepare them for writing their own compare and contrast articles which will be included in their newspaper projects. COLLECTED IN CLASS TODAY FOR A GRADE: How To rough drafts.

WEDNESDAY: Today in class, the students will complete the CRCT prep warm-up. After doing this, they will determine what they can compare and contrast for their newspaper article. Once they've made this determination, they will complete a quick Venn diagram to ensure they actually know enough similarities and differences to write a full article. Finally, they will begin a pre-write outline for this article. It should be completed as homework if it is not completed in class.
