AC - Periods 1 and 3: The Three Governors Controversy

Buried Truths - The Three Governors Controversy

When Georgia Had Three Governors

The Three Governors Controversy - New Georgia Encyclopedia

Write a two-paragraph constructed response to the following prompt: The Three Governors Controversy of 1946 is one of our state’s more embarrassing episodes, and made Georgia a nationwide laughing stock. Reflect on who legitimately won the governor's race and the process of how they attained that position. Consider how this approach is seen as unfair or corrupt.

In 1946, Eugene Talmadge was elected to a fourth term as governor of Georgia; however, he died a month later, before he could take office. In a bizarre, almost-comedic turn of events, for two months, three men—Melvin Thompson, Ellis Arnall and Herman Talmadge, son of Eugene —would lay claim to the governor’s seat.
